Foreign media Micron Technology plans to invest USD 7 billion to build a new factory in Hiroshima, Japan

According to foreign media reports, in addition to TSMC, storage chip and storage solution provider Micron Technology also plans to invest 800 billion yen (approximately US$6.99 billion) to build a new factory in Hiroshima, Japan.

Micron Technology said that the plant may specialize in the production of DRAM memory chips and is expected to start operations in 2024. According to reports, the Japanese government may provide financial assistance to this project of Micron Technology.

Founded in 1978, Micron Technology is one of the manufacturers of semiconductor storage and imaging products. Its main products include DRAM, NAND flash memory and CMOS image sensors. Apple is one of its most important customers.

Micron Technology plans to build a factory in Japan at a time when there is a severe shortage of chips worldwide. At the end of September this year, the company predicted that the current fiscal quarter revenue will be lower than analysts expected. It also warned that the company's memory chip shipments are expected to decline in the near term, as its PC customers face shortages of other parts.

In addition to Micron Technology, TSMC also plans to build a factory in Japan. On Thursday’s earnings analyst conference call, the company’s CEO Wei Zhejia announced that they plan to build a chip factory in Japan. The factory plans to start construction in 2022 and put it into operation in 2024.
